Department of French Language & Culture

About the Department

French is spoken by nearly 300 million people worldwide and is the official language of 29 countries and major international organizations, including Switzerland, Belgium, the province of Quebec in Canada, and several African countries. French Language and Culture is a major that offers a wide range of studies in the French language, French culture, and French-speaking countries. We welcome students who have an intellectual curiosity and passion for French language and culture, and who wish to develop into forward-thinking professionals with an international perspective.

Major Course Guide

French Society and Daily Life

A course dealing with the characteristics of French society and the culture of French life. Develop French language skills and intercultural communication skills through a variety of texts.

Francophonie Around the World

Study the cultures of various French-speaking regions around the world, including Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, and several African countries.

French Poetry and Chansons

Learn French by listening to French poems and songs, reflecting on the meaning of the work and relating it to our lives today.

Understanding Modern French

Develop a deeper understanding of contemporary French society through a variety of texts, including newspapers, magazines, etc.

We offer a weekly French Club with a native-speaking professor. The French Club provides students with the opportunity to improve their French language skills while enhancing their understanding of French culture through interaction with native speakers outside of class.

Subject-Related Certifications

DELF and DALF

Each is divided into listening, reading, writing, and oral sections, and the duration and difficulty vary depending on the level of the certification exam.

French Proficiency Test (TCF)

A test intended for all non-native French speakers who wish to have their French proficiency verified in a simple, reliable and fast way for professional or personal purposes.

French Proficiency Test (TEF)

This test is recognized by the French Ministry of Education and is useful for studying in French higher education or immigrating to a French-speaking country, as well as for enrolling in first-level courses at French universities.
